Hey Riders! It's Guido, with another ride report. Well, this was the "fourth" Saturday of the month, so we mounted up and head for Jacumba, which is located in the South Eastern part of San Diego County, near the Mexican border.
We left our Vale Terrace staging location at 8:30 with thirteen bikes and nineteen riders. What was amazing, was that we had several folks ride with us who we had not seen in awhile. We were truly blessed to have them with us. It was a reunion of sorts and we spent the day getting reacquainted.
As we pulled on to East Vista Way, the weather was a little on the cool side, but it was a beautiful day. Our group wound through the back roads going through Valley Center until connecting back up to Highway 76. From there, we headed East, took a short ride down Highway 79, until coming to State Route 2. From there it was all the way down to the desert floor, where we we took a right and then a quick left, heading East towards Shelter Valley.
Our first stop of the day was at the "Butterfield Stage" RV Resort. by then our group had traveled about 87 miles and we were ready for a "leg stretch", some snacks and some more fellowship. It was about 75 degrees and the weather was absolutely perfect!
Unless you are local or a student of history, you wouldn't know this, but that stretch of desert we traveled through, used to be part of the original route for the Butterfield Stage Line, as part of their route West to California. It's not all sand, lizards and rocks out there, as several areas of the South East route we took on our modern day "horses", are rich with history.
After our break, we continued on our route until coming to Interstate 8. From there, we headed back West until connecting back up to Old Highway 80. We encountered some construction on Old Highway 80, which caused a 20 minute delay, but no one seemed to be in a hurry, so it was all good. By then, we had a couple of our riders needing fuel, so we stopped for fuel. One of our riders had to stop earlier for fuel, but the construction delay allowed our rider to catch up. Once we were "whole" again, it was off to the Jacumba Resort and Spa for lunch. By then, everyone was starved and we were all past due for one of our favorite activities, which is eating food!
Our group practically took up the entire patio area, as we browsed through the menu and ordered lunch. It was a great time of fellowship and getting caught up with old friends. We left Jacumba at around 2:30 pm and continued down Old Highway 80, until connecting with the Sunrise Highway. From there, it was a great ride through the Laguna mountains, Cuyamaca and right down through the center of downtown Julian. Our final stop for the day was at Dudley's, where we once again took a short break and said our good byes. It was a great day of riding, fellowship and food. It was great to see some folks that we have not seen in awhile and we hope you come back next month and ride with us again. Special thanks goes out to Dave Sandstoe, who filled in as a road guard, since we were one short yesterday. Dave also rides for the Biggs Hog Group in San Marcos, and is a road guard for them. Thanks Dave for giving us a helping hand!
Well, that's about it. My trip odometer registered 257 miles by the time we got home and some folks road a bit farther before getting back home. Thanks to all who participated. Remember that we ride on the second Sunday of the month and also the fourth Saturday. For information, go to the Calvary Vista Web site, "click" on the ministries tab and scroll down to the "Motorcycle Fellowship". Our ride information is there and also a link to our blog site. We are also on Facebook, where you can view photo's from current and past rides. Until next month, God bless you all! Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!
